Artist in Residence: Ali Bruce

As the Artist-in-Residence at Zebraclub, Ali Bruce’s latest work explores recuperation and growth. The window display features a suite of paintings and bright forms cut from plywood that are playful and vary in scale, showcasing the breadth of her visual language.

Inspired by the transformative process of cutting, sanding, and painting wood, Bruce is continually intrigued by the material’s strength and tangibility. In her practice, she seeks to find a sense of lightness in contrast to weight, blending painting and sculpture.

Ali Bruce is a visual artist based in Vancouver. In 2014, she earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Emily Carr University and shortly after received a certificate in Communication Design from BCIT. Bruce has worked independently as a graphic illustrator, tattoo and mural artist. Currently, she is focusing more on her painting and studio practice. By juxtaposing playfulness with perfectionism, she explores themes of youthful curiosity, purpose, pain, and beauty.
