Emily Matick, Artist-in-Residence

Through arrangements and site-specific installations, Matick interrogates the tension between structure and impermanence, the dialogue between natural materials and spatial context, and the ways tradition intersects with contemporary expression. Her work emphasizes restraint, negative space, and the ephemerality of organic forms, inviting attentive, reflective encounters.

She exhibits frequently with the Vancouver Ikebana Association, assists with workshops, and is beginning the formal path toward teaching. As artist-in-residence at Zebraclub, Matick experiments beyond the philosophies of her formal training, exploring how ikebana’s principles might expand, adapt, and resonate within contemporary art contexts.

Based on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations in so-called Vancouver, Emily Matick is an ikebana practitioner whose work is deeply rooted in respecting tradition, developed in ongoing formal study under a master ikebana artist. She exhibits with the Vancouver Ikebana Association and has begun the formal path toward teaching within the ikebana community. Her work explores the tension between structure and impermanence, site-specific installation, and keeping tradition alive alongside contemporary art. As artist-in-residence at Zebraclub, she experiments with ikebana’s adaptation to contemporary spaces.
